Michael DeDonno, student al Universităţii Case Western Reserve, a scris articolul „Poker-ul: o abilitate”, bazat pe un studiu realizat în anul 2008. DeDonno a folosit 40 de studenţi, care au jucat opt runde cu un total de 200 de mâini. Aceştia au fost împărţiţi în două grupuri a câte 20; primul grup a primit informaţii despre jucători de poker profesionişti şi strategiile folosite de aceştia, în timp ce, tinerii din cel de-al doilea grup au primit informaţii despre jucători de poker care au făcut istorie fără nicio strategie, din noroc pur.
Michael DeDonno a constatat că studenţii care ştiau câteva strategii au luat decizii mai bune în timpul jocului, în comparaţie cu cei care nu ştiau.
